In the summer of 1989 the EuroBasket was held in Zagreb; where as could not be otherwise Yugoslavia playing home demonstrated its superiority. With extra motivation, coupled with a powerful team, Yugoslavia won with authority the European Gold, comfortably defeating Greece in the final by 98-7
The preliminary round of the Round of 16 went according to normal parameters and there was no surprise. So the best fourteen teams in Europe moved on to the next phase after passing the preliminary round of matches
