In 2000, the Cup Winners’ Cup final was held in Lausanne, where two years later Virtus Bologna and AEK Athens met in a final, this time with victory for the Greeks (83-76) against the Italians, who were suffering from serious injuries

Quarterfinals
AEK Athens – Hercules
Virtus Bologna – Valencia Basket
Lietuvos Rytas – Porto
Wroclaw – Zadar

Semi-finals
Zadar – AEK Athens
Lietuvos Rytas – Virtus Bologna

Thirty-two years after winning their first European Cup Winners’ Cup, AEK Athens have once again won this European tournament by defeating Kinder Bologna in the final, in a match that was a rematch of the 1998 Euroleague final, which pitted these same teams against each other and then ended in an Italian victory. The Bologna team reached the final badly weakened by injuries, without their top star Antoine Rigaudeau and with Alessandro Frosini as the only classical pivot, Ettore Messina was forced to submit a five-point opening salvo.
