In the summer of 1996, the Olympic Games were played in Atlanta, where the United States with a strong NBA team won the Olympic Gold without too much trouble to beat Yugoslavia in the final by 95-69, the difference between the United States and the rest of the world was abysmal at that time

The Americans eliminated Australia in the semi-finals, also emphatically, by 101-73. The Yugoslavs beat Lithuania 66-58. The bronze was won by Lithuania in their duel with the Australians by 80-74.
