In the summer of 1988, the Olympic Games were held in Seoul, where Gold was won by the Soviet Union after defeating Yugoslavia in the final by 76-63, in a game dominated by Sabonis and Marciulionis

In the semi-finals, the Soviets overcame the United States 82-76, and Yugoslavia did the same with Australia 91-70. In the fight for the Bronze, the United States defeated Australia 49-78.
