In 1953, the EuroBasket was held in the Soviet Union, where the hosts were absolute favourites and proved themselves from start to finish. Hungary and France completed the podium and only the French defeat between them decided the silver for the Hungarians, and the bronze for the Gauls

Such was the Soviet domination that no match could be considered final, not even in quotes. The matches in which the Soviets suffered most, against the Czechs and the Hungarians, were on the first and third matchdays. The USSR was crowned champion with two matches still to go.
